The Hinchliffe Pub in Hebden Bridge

Yorkshire’s most characterful rural inns.

Tucked away in the steep, wooded valley of Cragg Vale, The Hinchliffe Arms has been part of local life for well over a century. The building dates back to around 1850 and originally traded as The Cragg Vale Inn before being renamed in 1912 in honour of the Hinchliffe family, the influential mill owners of nearby Cragg Hall. Its solid stone construction and timeless country charm reflect the craftsmanship of the Calder Valley’s Victorian era, built to serve workers, farmers and travellers making their way through the rugged hillside routes. Through the decades, the pub has weathered ownership changes and community shifts but has always remained a fixture of village life, a gathering place for walkers, cyclists and locals alike. Even after periods of closure, it has been lovingly restored, most recently reopening in 2023, continuing its legacy as one of Yorkshire’s most characterful and enduring rural inns.

Our Amenities

Inside, The Hinchliffe Arms keeps all the charm you’d hope for from a true Yorkshire country pub. There’s a crackling real fire in winter, flagstone floors, and plenty of cosy corners to settle into after a walk through the valley. The menu champions hearty, well-cooked food made with local produce, best enjoyed with a pint of well-kept cask ale or a glass of something from the bar’s hand-picked selection. It’s dog-friendly too, with muddy boots and wagging tails always welcome. Outside, the beer garden looks out across the hills, a perfect spot to unwind after exploring the nearby Calderdale Way and woodland trails. With space for community gatherings and events, it’s a pub that still feels at the heart of village life, warm, welcoming, and built for good company.
