Cross Keys Inn
Proper Moorland pub
18th century traditional pub
The Cross Keys Inn, perched above Uppermill on the old Marsden Packhorse route, is a classic moorland‑stone pub dating back to 1745, with its tavern first opening in 1763. Its thick stone walls, exposed beams, and stone‑flagged floors in the public bar preserve the character of a bygone era, while careful restorations have kept its historic charm intact. Over the centuries, it has remained largely true to its origins, offering a glimpse into the region’s past and standing as a tangible piece of Saddleworth’s heritage.
Over decades it’s become a hub for local clubs and community groups: it’s home to the Oldham Mountain Rescue Team, supports the Saddleworth Runners Club and other outdoor‑oriented associations, and regularly hosts live music, folk nights and community gatherings.
It’s also marked its reputation: the Cross Keys is one of England’s few pubs to have appeared in the national real‑ale reference guide — CAMRA’s Good Beer Guide — for multiple decades in a row, a nod to its consistency and quality.
